The Underdog Part 6; Tempest

Few dogs who were running for their life had their tails between their legs and were running abruptly, stopping and barking after covering some distance. The chaos echoed the streets and all the dogs then as in a chorus, barked in unison.  No one knew what had happened, but as in humans every dog coming out of their respective shelters enquired in the loud barking. These sonorous barking increased the speed of already absconding dogs, who thought more dogs have joined the chase and now instead of looking back they sped away from the spot of trouble.

It all started when Blackie, put his plan to action when the night was still, heavy with sleep and dawn was just beginning to pull over the blanket of sunrise. Attack happened. The three Pawteers who were unaware of the impending danger looked callously merry as if mocking Blackie in the face. Blackie, looked proud and wagged his tongue to cool off the body that burned as much with exhaustion as with rage. No, one could guess why Blackie, whom everyone feared, took this vile task in his mind. He but a dog who would never go after a dog or two, unless they challenge or encroach upon his territory. Now was mad with rage. Rage due to reason is still bad but rage without reason is worse.

Browny was anticipating this attack, he purposely didn't inform his other Pawteer friends of impending danger as the trap has to be perfect. It worked for Blackie, fell for it. He didn't guess or rather he was more confident that three Pawteers would not have any help if he had his way. When the shadows of his hench dogs arrived near the pipe. They met with fiery eyes, they had never seen before. they looked big bigger than any dogs ever seen and when they as by instinct barked at the unknown and dangerous fiery eyes, at that very moment they laid waste the plans of Blackie. Who first in the first few moments of attack was assured of victory and every bark elated him to a state of anxiety that was hard to suppress. He walked around, bit his back, sat erect, and chased down his tail. Nothing helped anxiety increase the moment barking started and the anxiety was reluctant to let him go.

The fiery eyes and barking alerted the Pawteers and who were taken aback by the presence of shadows just a few feet from their pipes were unsure of the next action. Fight or Flight? They chose to fight and when they arrived at the mount of the pipe they saw that the shadows were barking at somebody and when they looked in the direction of where the shadows were barking they realized that It was Browny who was holding two sticks of fire pivoted on a sphere which resembled fiery looking eyes. All of sudden. Browny, dropped the firesticks in front of the shadows and jumped at them. This maneuver had a  very strange effect on the onlookers, for them it looked like Browny just jumped from the fire and the shadows started running. Seeing them run, the remaining Pawteers too jumped and started chasing them. There was a complete raucous on the street where shadows were being chased by the small dogs. All the other dogs who saw these and were wronged by the shadows sometime or the other started running after them. When shadows looked back they did not see a dog or two chasing but whole groups of them and they thought this is probably a dangerous enemy they faced who would inspire courage in otherwise cowardly dogs.

On the lookout mound, Blackie was hearing things, sonorous barking and yelping sound, amidst those barks. When he saw that his fearsome shadows were having their tails between their legs and all the dogs chasing he, took off from the mound and started running himself. The fear gripped his heart slowly crawling in and taking over his mind. Blackie ran and ran...and when he reached the outskirts of the city he looked back only to find, his shadows coming to him panting and breathing heavy. As they came to closure the shadows who previously were fearful of him, looked irate and angry. They all encircled him. That night a more yelp was heard and then never after.

The Pawteers who put on such a show of courage and freed the streets from the shadows were hailed as heroes and life on the streets become normal and happy.

Amidst, these celebrations and merry moments, Browny remembered the car and the dog within and he gave a long look at the sprawling skyline of the city ...one day he will go to the city and sit in the car.
