The Underdog Part 12; The Escape

The plan was superb, it was indeed easy just to run away from the compound, but years of being caged behind strong bars, convinced these dogs that there was nothing they could do. Browny was more determined when some dogs who previously hesitated and were reluctant, joined the plan it was decided.

A few days went by, and the conditions of cages began to deteriorate, the disinfectant smell now long gone, was taken over by the overwhelming stench. For older dogs, this was usual relief, they learned to accommodate this stench, the dogs who had lost olfactory senses were as unaware as the smell of disinfectant. Nothing was good about this hellish place. Soon, the day arrived, it was just like a normal day, the people came in with disinfectants, cleaned the cages, uncollared the dogs, washed them, and fed them good food. The dogs were ready...

The vehicle of the city people arrived at the gates of the compound and as the gates were opened, there was only a single bark, "Bhow", No one noticed it but it alerted the dog's ears and when the vehicle entered the compound, at a time, all the dogs ran towards it, before the people from could realize what was happening, all the dogs from the compound were outside and running in all directions this way it was impossible to catch them.

It was a clever plan and Browny who was the one to signal the dogs, ran with all his might, he ran so fast and hard, he never heeded where he was going and when he reached a single road, that divided the lake on side and land on the other, Browny crossed this road and came upon a small cottage that was on the lakeside.

He came around to the door, where he found an old man sitting on a chair, he hesitated a moment, he never had any good interactions before with humans, and as he turned to leave, he heard the old man call him..he turned and look back, he could not believe his eyes, the old man had a hand stretched towards him and in the hand, he had a biscuit which he was giving to him. Starved and exerted due to running, Browny hesitating approached the old man and when he took the biscuit, he immediately recoiled back to some distance and ate the biscuit, while he was chewing the last bits of the biscuit, he again heard the old man call him, this time he had two biscuits in his hand. He again came hesitatingly and took biscuits, he didn't recoil back, but was looking at the old hand while eating the biscuits. The old had taken out the entire packet of biscuits and placed it in front of Browny, Browny hurriedly ate all the biscuits from the packet all the inhibitions vanished and now all he knew was the hunger and taste of the biscuits. when he looked up the old man was grooming his hand over his head and neck. The touch had softened Browny, he enjoyed the grooming of shriveled hands and the rough lines of the palms did the work of a comb, it felt nice and warm and Browny closed his eyes.

Browny loitered nearby for a while and when the old man, got up and walked towards the truck, Browny got up from his place, shrugged off the dust, wagged his tail, and walked behind the old man towards his truck.

In the old man, Browny found a friend.
