The stranger in the water

When Meera looked at her reflection on the disturbed water of the placid lake, she only half recognized the person. The evening breeze that softly caressed her hair or the sinking sun gleamed hopefully, asking for a gift of the smile before pulling over the cozy wilt of night and calling it a day, had not any effect on her.

Little soft footsteps of her 5year old kid, who was about to pull mischief on her did make her aware of the water and her position of being prey to her little devil. She took a long breath as she gave a look at the reflection in the water, and turning half surprised her son. Who like a thief caught in the act, stopped for a second or two and when he realized that his mistakes would be forgiven by these ever-loving eyes, he smiled a little giggle and put out his arm for the embrace that make his world safe and happy.

Meera tried hard to hold back her tears as she relaxed in the tight embrace of her son, he will into a strong man she thought. Tears did roll down her reddened cheeks and when they touch her son's cheeks he looked at his mother, holding her face in his tiny little hand he wiped the tears away and without saying a word pecked her on either cheek and embraced her again. He will be a wise man, she thought.

Meera was a single mother in a city of dreams. She came to a city filled with hopes and dreams, after a hard struggle for two years finding her way through a labyrinth of corporate offices. She landed a job as HR in an MNC and settled there for good.  She met her colleague and now her deceased husband, in the same office who worked in sales for the company. They like any other couple dreamed a dream that had their happiness of theirs encompassed. Yet fate had different plans, when her husband, he left behind a son just 6 months old. But the tears won't do any good. They will not. One must pull up the pants and face life head-on. No regrets, no sorrows to hold back.

Meera did just that, she worked hard to gain a promotion which gave her enough time to not let her son go through a life of creche and daycares. She worked from home often becoming the mother she wanted to be. Life was made easy by facing challenges head-on, being a single mother comes with its own challenges yet Meera trodded that stretch with an iron will and determination.

"Mummy, can I go and play with others?" disturbed by the voice of her own son, she came to present and wiped her tears from her cheeks and found a tissue with haste in her purse to dab those watery eyes. while doing so she replied he can and the kid left her to embrace like a bird does the nest and flies to take on the sky. She stood up, and gave a last look at the reflection which after ripples subsided, was getting clearer and clearer. She saw the reflection it was a reflection of a brave strong woman, who had an iron resolve and determination to push through the bog of life. She smiled at that woman and she person smiled back and when Meera turned back, she saw her friends enjoying the party she threw on her son's fifth birthday. Small kids including her son were playing around, running, and being mischievous.

Meera smiled, being a happy woman filled with dreams and hopes she joined the party.
