The Most Eligible Bachelors

The Most Eligible Bachelors

Don't get any ideas, ladies, these are the most eligible bachelors. Why you ask? well to start with these are the only species left of its kind and they too are scarce. This marks the beginning of the countdown.

Tribute to Sudan

The only male white rhino that passed away in Kenya, was named Sudan after the country of his birth. Also called "The most eligible bachelor", Sudan was only one of his kind and now he too has passed away. In an attempt to save the species the animal was brought back from Czech to the African wildland. He lived mostly healthy life, with security as synonymous to the resident of The white house. He was constantly watched by militarized rangers 24/7 in an attempt to save him from poachers. He ultimately succumbed to his age and wounds.

The Indian Subcontinent
Coming back to the Indian subcontinent, once the Indian cheetah (Asiatic Cheetah) raced the Vindhya and Sahyadri mountains but has vanished from the continent. Today it is found in Iran, it's only refuge. Indian cheetah was widely poached in times before and after the independence. Some kings and maharajas even fancied having them as pets. The cheetah no longer roams the continent, it has been preserved in Iran and India is trying desperately to reproduce the species.

Another bigger problem today India faces is the diminishing numbers of Bengal tigers, these were found in abundance in Indian peninsula except for the Himalayan region, now due to excessive and uncontrolled poaching, they have been confined to sanctuaries and Sundarbans.

Pune's has its own history of tigers the diminished Sinhagad forest once housed many tigers, today neither there is any jungle nor any tiger.

The blackbuck. The Nilgiri Tahr another species belonging to the deer community is facing the same fate.

Probably the Gir national park is the only place left for Asiatic lion., who were poached for their skin and claws.

So is the case of lion tail macaques who once dominated the Anamalai hills in southern western ghats are only limited to 2000 to 3000 in numbers.

The Snow leopard is also considered species endangered and on the verge of extinction.

These animals only represent the catastrophic impact the humans are causing due to urbanisation, industries and superstitions. We should be more sensitive towards the issue since it's not just this animals, its the balance of the ecosystem that is endangered. Today many species aquatic, terrestrial and aerial are facing extinction. It will not be long when we might have to explain to our coming generations that we have destroyed the species that survived for thousands of year on their own without wars, industries and urbanisation these species evolved and kept balance. How come we humans being the smarter one can't keep up with them.

Previously if a tiger would prey on deer, and finish eating, the leftover was then eaten by foxes and wolves or hyenas and the whatever was left it was finished by the vultures so that the body of animal preyed upon fed many species. now there are but a few foxes and wolves or hyenas and vultures are seen in few places.

Today if an animal dies of natural causes, its body keeps rotting unless it is buried, since there are no vultures.

If we are not ready to conserve them soon there will be time when there will be no one left to conserve US.
